About Us
ZAZU is a story of two worlds meeting - of East and West, craft and design, heritage and home. Founded by Zahrah, from Indonesia, and Ryan, from the UK, ZAZU grew from a shared appreciation for natural materials, considered living, and the quiet beauty of handmade furniture.
Our journey began in Java, where Zahrah’s roots lie and where woodwork is more than a skill - it’s a way of life. There, we work closely with skilled artisans whose knowledge runs deep, whose hands shape timber using tools and techniques passed down through generations. Inspired by their craft and guided by the sculptural forms of nature, we design pieces that honour the character of the wood itself.
We work primarily with sustainably sourced Indonesian hardwoods - including teak, Rosewood, and other native species - each chosen for its grain, tone, and lasting strength. Every piece is made in small batches and finished with care. Some are treated with natural oils to enrich the wood’s warmth and protect it for everyday life. Others are left raw, allowing you to finish them as you wish- or to let them age naturally with time and touch.
From our home in Norfolk to the workshops of Java, ZAZU is rooted in care, connection, and a slower way of living. Our furniture carries that story. Of family. Of culture. Of the trees that stood long before us. And of the makers who bring them into form.
Whether you live in a modern apartment or a countryside retreat, ZAZU invites you to furnish with intention - to choose pieces that feel grounded, enduring, and alive.
Behind every table, chair, or sculpted form is a story - of hands, place, and intention. ZAZU is led by a small team spanning Norfolk and Central Java, where we work closely with independent workshops and craftspeople. From design to delivery, we believe in showing the people who bring each piece to life.
“Each material has its own message. Wood speaks of warmth and life.”
- Frank Lloyd Wright
We believe that how something is made is just as important as what it becomes. That’s why every ZAZU piece begins with responsibly sourced hardwoods and is shaped by hand in small artisan workshops across Java. We prioritise low-impact processes, traditional techniques, and a slower pace of production - so the furniture in your home reflects a more thoughtful way of living.
